Four MAN 27/38 engines ensure security of supply for the country’s capital

Lungga-Power-StationIn May 2014, MAN Diesel & Turbo received an order from the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) to carry out the construction of a new Power Station near the country’s capital, Honiara. The power station will be equipped with 4 x MAN 9L27/38 generator sets running on diesel fuel, with provision for two more in the future. Each generator will produce 2.5 MWe.

As this is an EPC contract, MAN Diesel and Turbo has responsibility for designing the installation, manufacturing and procuring the necessary equipment and full responsibility for constructing the project.

Civil and structural scope for the project includes design and installation of the power house and switch room buildings, concrete foundations, roads within the complex and various tanks for storage of fuel, water and waste oil.  Mechanical systems such as radiator cooling, lubricating oil, fuel oil, compressed air circuits and associated piping are also within MAN’s scope of supply. Electrical scope includes 11kV switchboards, HV and LV transformers, protection, load sharing, generator set and station control systems, SCADA plus cabling and installation. On conclusion of the site works, MAN will execute commissioning of the power plant with its experts from both Denmark and Australia.

Niel Halvorsen, General Manager - Power Engineering at MAN Diesel & Turbo in Australia, said: “The Lungga project cements another reference in the Pacific Region for MAN’s 27/38 Diesel Engine. The combination of proven reliability and high efficiency make it an excellent choice for Pacific Island nations looking to restore reliability while reducing their diesel fuel bill over the long-term”.
